White Flint is an unincorporated part of southern Montgomery County, Maryland. White Flint includes the area from Grosvenor and the Washington Beltway, to Twinbrook and Rockville to the north.

Formerly farmland, White Flint borders the site of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, home of Josian Henson, memorialized by Harriet Beecher Stowe before the Civil War. Today, White Flint is more widely known as the home of White Flint mall and a series of strip shopping malls.

Bisected by Rockville Pike, a congested central traffic artery, White Flint is one of the last under-developed areas of Montgomery County served by a Metro subway station. Economic studies suggest that the area could support a wide variety of retail and job opportunities, as well as many new homes, in close proximity to the subway station. As such, White Flint offers an unparalleled opportunity to replace an aging retail hub dominated by strip malls and traffic jams with a modern, green, transit-oriented community for the 21st Century.

In 2006, the Montgomery County Planning Board, recognizing White Flint’s potential, began a planning process to turn that vision into a reality. For more information on the process, visit the Planning page here.

Familiar with Montgomery County’s well-earned reputation for civic involvement and analysis, the Planning Board convened “the world’s largest Advisory Group,” known as the White Flint Sector Plan Advisory Group. More information about citizen involvement is available here

The White Flint Sector Plan has been approved by the Planning Board. The Plan now moves to the County Council for further actions. More information is available here.
